BioTech 2017 and the 7th Czech-Swiss Symposium

The BioTech 2017 and the 7th Czech-Swiss Symposium took place in the National Technical Library (NTL), in Dejvice, Prague from 13th to 17th June, 2017.The symposium was organised by The Biotechnology Society, together with Faculty of Food and Biochemical Technology of the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW, Switzerland, as well as other partners and sponsors from the Czech Republic and Switzerland. Abstracts of these lectures and poster presentations can be obtained in an Abstract Book (ISBN 978-80-7080-989-1). Selected lectures were published in the high impact journal, Biotechnology Advances, published by Elsevier.

BioTech 2014 and the 6th Czech-Swiss Symposium

The Biotechnology Symposium BioTech 2014, together with the 6th Czech-Swiss Symposium took place in the National Technical Library (NTL), in Dejvice, Prague from 11th to 14th June, 2014. The symposium was organised by The Biotechnology Society, together with Faculty of Food and Biochemical Technology of the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague, ZHAW Wadenswil, and other partners and sponsors from the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

Two hundred and sixty five participants from 32 countries (excluding VIP guests and organisers) took part in the Prague symposium; 50 % were from the Czech Republic, 20 % from Switzerland, and 30 % were from other countries (Algeria, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Chile, China, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA).

Before the actual symposium, three interesting workshops were organised. The first was organised under the leadership of Andrea Hoogenkamp-O´Brien, of the publishing house Elsevier entitled "How to get manuscript published?". This workshop was received with great interest. Workshops Biotechnology for controlled remediation of sites contaminated with chlorinated ethenes: Czech - Swiss teamwork joins research, was organised to highlight the potential for biotechnological studies in the partner’s countries and was supported especially by the Universities (ICT Prague and ZHAW) and by The Association of Biotechnological Societies in The Czech Republic (CzechBio). Pre-conference Workshop: International Postgraduate Research Programme Concept Meeting was organised by university and biotechnology personnel to strengthen intercommunication and to help both students and symposium participants to capitalise on working opportunities in biotechnology.

The following days were filled with lectures, poster sessions and workshops. There were 6 sections: Large and Small Molecules for Pharma, Food, Feed and Nutrition, Biomaterials and Biochemicals, Environmental Biotechnology, Biorefinery and Microalgae Biotechnology. Seventy seven speakers presented their lectures.

There was also an interesting social program available. On Thursday evening, Gala dinner in Břevnov Monastery with the medieval brewing demonstration was organized. On Friday evening, a guided tour through historical centre of Prague was organized. On Saturday, an excursion to Budějovický Budvar with Český Krumlov sightseeing was prepared.
